What is a Clutch?
The clutch is a wearing component which transfers power/drive from the engine to the gearbox (which then goes on to drive your road wheels). Most vehicle owners will leave the replacement of this item until a number of issues will become apparent signalling that it is due to be replaced.
There are normally three main problems that occur with a manual transmission clutch starting to fail:
- Clutch begins to slip in gear – This is a symptom of the clutch plate wearing out.
- Clutch engages or disengages in a jerky manner – This is a symptom of a sticking throw out bearing or broken fingers on the pressure plate.
- Clutch does not engage when you press the pedal – This is a symptom of either the clutch master cylinder failure, low fluid level or that the clutch cable has snapped.
